How On-Sight Works in a School EnvironmentDesigned for schools, On-Sight enables administrators to monitor and record detailed information on student application and internet activity. Custom reports and automatic screenshots provide the information needed to identify problems and guide responsible behavior.
1. Clients
Monitor any computer in your school network with ease. Just install the On-Sight client software and connect it to the On-Sight database. An MSI compatible installation process makes it easy to roll this out over hundreds, or even thousands of computers. Your school chooses whether to make the client visible or invisible to student. In either case, students will have no ability to disable the monitoring software. On-Sight works with notebook computers too - as long as they are connected to the network you will be able to monitor them.
- See every computer in your school, or throughout your district
- Works in the classroom, computer lab, library and on mobile clients
- Supports Windows 98/XP/2000/Vista (Sorry - no Mac clients initially)
- Minimal footprint, easily deployed to 1000's of computers
- Secure from student attempts at tampering
2. Supervisor Console
The simple and intuitive interface of the On-Sight Supervisor Console makes it easy for school administrators to monitor student on-line activity and computer use. Supervisor access can be customized to match individual needs and responsibilities. For example, the principal and vice principal may be able to see every computer in the school, while the lab supervisor sees only those in the computer lab, and the librarian only those in the library. Multiple supervisors can monitor overlapping sets of students or computers simultaneously, and administrators can access the supervisor console from any computer in the network.
- Supervise a virtually unlimited number of computers
- Select logical groupings of computers or students to monitor
- Adjust image size and speed of advance as needed
- Switch to real-time full-screen supervision of any computer when required
- Snap screenshots stamped with time, date, computer and login information
- Initiate simple text chats with students when their activities need correction
3. Auto-Supervisor
On-Sight's Auto-Supervisor function makes it possible for any administrator to monitor student computer activity continuously, without spending the day tied to a computer. Just select the groups of computers or students that you want to monitor, the data you want to record, and how frequently you want to capture screen shots. On-Sight gathers the information you need automatically, in a database that is easily searchable.
- Keep track of student activity even when no administrator is watching
- Select high risk computers or students for closer monitoring
- Log web sites and application activity by computer and by student
- Capture screenshots automatically, at intervals you select
- Store information in the central database for convenient review when needed
- Easily locate the data you need using built-in search tools
- Create custom reports to share with students, teachers and parents
4. Database
On-Sight uses a central database to store data on a secure server that can be available 24/7. The robust datbase support eliminates the possibility of a student hijacking the system. (Tip: If you want to evaluate On-Sight on a few computers you won't need a dedicated server, but for a typical implementation you will want to install the database on a server that is available 24/7.)
- Microsoft SQL2005 Express provided, full Microsoft SQL Server installations supported
- Securely collects and maintains data in a central repository
- Identifies legitimate supervisors by Windows login (Active Directory integrated)
- Robust security eliminates the possibility of a student hijacking the system
- Maintains associations of supervisors to student computers
- Load tested for over 10,000 computers, monitor a virtually unlimited number of clients
- Database searches may be exported to spreadsheet format (CSV)
- Automatic maintenance keeps size of database within user defined limits

5. Database Administrator The On-Sight Database Administrator provides overall control of access to On-Sight within your school system. Using this module you assign rights for use of the On-Sight supervision functions, and determine which group of computers and students specific individuals are able to monitor. The Database Administrator also provides an interface for managing the On-Sight Database. Built-in tools make it easy to see when your data storage space will be fill, and to flush older data to make room for new recordings.
- Assign supervision rights and control access to monitoring capabilities
- Ensure individuals see only the students/computers they are responsible for
- Manage database parameters, set limits for database storage
- Monitor database usage and determine when older data will be replaced
6. Network On-Sight works seamlessly with Windows and Novell networks. Active Directory support makes it easy to auto-synch with your directory. On-Sight is designed to have limited impact on your network bandwidth. The software uses optimized image compression combined with smart data sharing to eliminate redundancies and reduce the load on network traffic, even when monitoring a large number of computers.
- Active Directory integration for Microsoft Windows networks
- Independent SQL authentication for workgroups and other network configurations, including Novell
- Minimal impact upon network traffic, even when monitoring thousands of clients
- Clients automatically reconnects for monitoring when attached to the network
System Requirement
Before you begin to install On-Sight, verify that your network and classroom computers meet all of the following system requirements. You must also have a valid serial number to fully activate On-Sight. You may install only a 3-client trial version without a serial number.
Database Server
The database server must have the following configuration:
- Windows 2000 (SP4) or 2003 (SP1) Server, Windows 2000 (SP4), XP (SP2) or Vista
- 1 GHz Pentium III Class CPU or greater
- 512 MB RAM or more
- 350 MB Hard-disk space (more required for data storage)
Network
The network must have the following minimum configuration:
- Wired network: 10 Mbps full duplex; 100 Mbps or higher recommended
- Wireless network: 802.11 b/g
Computers
The supervisor and client computers must have the following minimum configuration:
- Supervisor Computers: Windows 2000, XP or Vista

Note: On-Sight requires that all connected computers be able to resolve network naming. IP addresses alone are not sufficient for full operation of the product. Any fully functional name resolution system is adequate (e.g. DNS, WINS).
Installing and Configuration
Read the On-Sight Quick Start Guide (included with the install files) for important information on installing and configuring On-Sight.
Evaluating On-Sight On A Few Computers
You may wish to evaluate On-Sight on a few computers in order to gain an understanding of its features and capabilities. Free evaluation copies of On-Sight are available for download which will run indefinitely without a license key on up to 3 clients. When you are ready to evaluate On-Sight on a larger network, contact GenevaLogic to obtain a license key that will enable a free 30-day evaluation on an unlimited number of client computers.
When evaluating On-Sight with only a few clients you can install the On-Sight database, On-Sight Database Administrator and On-Sight Supervisor Console on a single computer that meets the On-Sight system requirements. Use the Simple Installation Option outlined in the On-Sight Quick Start Guide. You can also use this option when installing On-Sight in a single computer lab.
Q. Can On-Sight be used from a central location such as a school or district office?
A. Yes. A head teacher or school administrator can monitor an entire school from his or her office, or from any computer on the school network with On-Sight installed.
Q. Can On-Sight be used across multiple schools?
A. Yes. A properly authorized administrator can choose to connect to any available On-Sight database in any school on a common network in order to monitor multiple schools from a central office. The administrator must have proper credentials on each of the databases to be monitored.
Q. Can On-Sight be used by a teacher to monitor a single classroom or computer lab?
A. Yes, there is no reason that On-Sight cannot be used in this way. However, in most cases, teachers will prefer to use Vision classroom management software to supervise a single classroom or computer lab, because of the addition teaching and control tools that it provides. Where there is a need for an administrator to remotely monitor the classroom or computer lab, than On-Sight will be the approprate choice.
Q. How does On-Sight work with Vision? Can they be used on the same computers? What about other brands of classroom management software?
A. On-Sight and Vision are independent products that use similar technologies but operate in different ways. Vision classroom management software is designed for use by teachers who are actively engaged in teaching students in their clasroom or computer lab. On-Sight is designed for administrators who need to continuously monitor and record computer activity throughout their school system and may not always be present to directly supervise student computer use. Vision and On-Sight can be used simultaneously on school computers without problems. On-Sight should also be able to monitor computers that have other brands of classroom management software installed without issue.
Q. Does On-Sight work on Macintoshes?
A. No. The first release of On-Sight only supports Windows clients.
Q. Will On-Sight block the use of applications or internet sites?
A. No. On-Sight is not designed to control student activity but rather to monitor and record it. There is a chat feature within On-Sight that enables administrators to communicate with students about inappropriate behavior. For situations where the ability to directly control student computers is required, we recommend the use of Vision classroom management software.
